Using time-varying transition probabilities in Markov switching processes to adjust US fiscal policy for asset prices

2013

This paper tests for nonlinear effects of asset prices on the US fiscal policy. By modeling government spending and taxes as time-varying transition probability Markovian processes (TVPMS), we find that taxes significantly adjust in a nonlinear fashion to asset prices. In particular, taxes respond to housing and (to a smaller extent) to stock price changes during normal times. However, at periods characterized by high financial volatility, government taxation only counteracts stock market developments (and not the dynamics of the housing sector). As for government spending, it is neutral vis-a-vis the asset market cycles. We conclude that, correcting the fiscal balance and, notably, the rev…

Transition probabilities for non self-adjoint Hamiltonians in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces

2015

In a recent paper we have introduced several possible inequivalent descriptions of the dynamics and of the transition probabilities of a quantum system when its Hamiltonian is not self-adjoint. Our analysis was carried out in finite dimensional Hilbert spaces. This is useful, but quite restrictive since many physically relevant quantum systems live in infinite dimensional Hilbert spaces. In this paper we consider this situation, and we discuss some applications to well known models, introduced in the literature in recent years: the extended harmonic oscillator, the Swanson model and a generalized version of the Landau levels Hamiltonian. Not surprisingly we will find new interesting feature…

What we look at in paintings: A comparison between experienced and inexperienced art viewers

2016

How do people look at art? Are there any differences between how experienced and inexperienced art viewers look at a painting? We approach these questions by analyzing and modeling eye movement data from a cognitive art research experiment, where the eye movements of twenty test subjects, ten experienced and ten inexperienced art viewers, were recorded while they were looking at paintings. Eye movements consist of stops of the gaze as well as jumps between the stops. Hence, the observed gaze stop locations can be thought as a spatial point pattern, which can be modeled by a spatio-temporal point process. We introduce some statistical tools to analyze the spatio-temporal eye movement data, a…

Calculation of modification of alkali metal atomic transition probability in strong external magnetic field and its application

2010

International audience; Interaction of alkali atoms with external magnetic field induced a splitting and a shift of their energy levels. We have study this interaction for external field from 0 to 5000 Gauss when the alkali vapor is confined in submicron thin vapor cell with thickness L = λ/2. Rubidium and Sodium vapors have been studied. The Hamiltonian can be expressed as the sum of the unperturbated atomic Hamiltonian and the so-called Zeeman Hamiltonian. The probability of a transition, induced by the laser electric field is proportional to the square of the transfer coefficients modified by the presence of the magnetic field. We will show that the strong nonlinearity of the transition …
